CWC-FPRA MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Join the CWC-FPRA Mentorship Program in 2021!

Mentorship can be helpful and enjoyable for both mentors and mentees. The CWC-FPRA Mentorship Program began in 2019 to help both new and experienced chapter members connect with others and develop in meaningful ways.

Mentors can provide professional support, share accountability and serve as a trusted sounding board. They can help set boundaries, and they can also give the unfiltered objective truth. This relationship is not only provides valuable career growth for the mentee but gives the mentor an opportunity to give something back to their professional community. There is the satisfaction of supporting someone and seeing them flourish and be successful. This relationship can also enable the mentor to re-evaluate some of their own work practices and business decisions, and it can also possibly spark some new ideas and collaborations.

Here are some traits of some successful mentors:

  1. A Mentor empowers you to make the right choices and take risks
  2. A Mentor is integral to your learning and growth
  3. Mentors set time-management expectations from the beginning
  4. Mentors facilitate good energy and are a positive source of support (not a critic)

Here are some things to consider:

The Harvard Business Review outlines what a mentee should know about what they want before seeking out a mentor. Do you need a coach to work through performance-related issues, a sponsor who can champion your promotion, or a connector with access to the relationships you need to do your job well? Knowing what you want is critical to not wasting your or your mentor’s time. For mentees, it’s important to come into the relationship with a clear idea of what you want to gain from it. Don’t expect the mentor to do all the work. Tell them what you are hoping to learn, where you need guidance and what areas you’d like to strengthen or receive feedback on.

For mentors, it’s important to set and manage expectations from the beginning about what you can offer your mentee, whether it’s advice on negotiating a contract, a connection to that important person, or ongoing feedback on projects. Be encouraging, constructive and forthright.
