In a world where communication is ever evolving, we have a group around us to keep us steady. An FPRA membership not only helps with your professional development growth, but also creates a group around you ready to support you, your career, and all your public relations questions. We’re highlighting members’ stories and experiences with FPRA in our new blog series. Below, Blair Bloomston, Founder & CEO of Leaders Uplifted, shares how FPRA has pushed her to discover a new level of her own work.
- What was your initial reasoning behind joining FPRA? What was the very first thing that drew you in?
My journey with FPRA has actually spanned two membership stints, and each time it’s been for a slightly different reason. About a decade ago, I was initially drawn in by the opportunity to network with truly brilliant people. I saw FPRA as a place to meet like-minded professionals who were passionate about public relations. I took a break when my kids were little, then fast forward to the last five years, and what has really kept me engaged are the deep friendships I’ve made with those same incredible professionals. What I absolutely love about FPRA is how it’s not competitive — it’s all about collaboration. Members are constantly referring one another, openly sharing ideas, and really embracing the spirit of “we’re all here to learn, so let’s share the wealth.” That’s something so rare and so valuable.
- What has surprised you about being a member of FPRA?
What has surprised me most is that FPRA is genuinely the best networking club in town — and I mean *fun* networking! Whether it’s bridge walks, pop-up trivia nights, or just having great conversations with some really cool, down-to-earth professionals, this group offers a unique vibe. I call them my ‘work besties,’ and it’s amazing how much joy we all find in collaborating. Honestly, it’s a bit surprising how freely I can say all of that out loud, but I truly believe this is the future of work — finding happiness and connection in the people we collaborate with.
- How has being a part of the local chapter impacted your professional life? What are the things you’ve been able to draw from membership that you’ve taken back to your job?
As a new training Agency founder, it’s crucial for me to continually push myself to deliver top-tier work. That’s why attending this year’s Golden Image and Pinnacle Awards Gala at the PR & Comms Summit was such a game-changer. It started with celebrating the success of our chapter – it was phenomenal to see us winning Golden Image and Pinnacle Awards left and right — but it also gave me a broader sense of what public relations brings to the table: opportunity, excellence, and prestige. Seeing that level of achievement helped me realize that we’re building something lasting — a real legacy for public relations. It’s something that makes me proud to cheekily live up to our inside nickname of the “Central Best Coast!”
- What are you looking forward to this year with FPRA, Events, Professional Development?
I’m definitely looking forward to the events this year! They always provide a much-needed shakeup from my day-to-day workflows, and I love the insights and energy I get from connecting with others. It’s refreshing and always leaves me inspired. But beyond the fun of events, I’m really feeling supported on the professional development track. Our chapter does such a fantastic job celebrating the achievements of members, especially when it comes to earning your APR, CPRC, or other credentials. That level of encouragement is something truly special, and it makes a big difference in keeping me motivated and growing.
- What else would you like people to know about your experience with FPRA?
If you only have time to really engage in one professional development community this year, I can’t recommend FPRA enough. It strikes the perfect balance between social connection and professional growth, and the opportunities for recognition at both the local and state levels are truly unmatched. Being part of FPRA gives you a front-row seat to one of the coolest and most high-value professions in 2024. 11 out of 10—highly recommend!
