And the Lifetime Achievement Award Goes to.....Virginia Carnahan, APR, CPRC
Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Ginya Carnahan, APR, CPRC

Five Chapter Awards are given out each year by the Central West Coast with the Lifetime Achievement Award being the highest honor. This year, the decision was unanimous and the distinction of being awarded the Joseph J. Curley, APR, CPRC PR Lifetime Achievement Award, went to Virginia “Ginya” Carnahan, APR, CPRC.

We've included a portion of Ginya's thoughtful remarks accepting the award. Inspired by a presentation given by sports reporter Don Yeager, Ginya put together a list of the unique qualities of PR achievers:

1. How they think - with achievers it’s personal. They hate to lose.
2. They believe.
3. They have contagious enthusiasm.
4. They hope for the best, but prepare for all possibilities
5. They live 24/7, there is no off season.
6. They are visionaries; they imagine success and keep that vision foremost.
7. They are risk takers.
8. They know how to regroup and adjust.
9. They are the ultimate teammate.
10. With them, it’s more than money.
11. They do unto others. Their character is defined by how they treat others.
12. They live with integrity.
13. They embrace the idea of being a role model and a mentor.

“This is certainly a memorable time in my life and I’m so happy I could share it with people who are all my friends,” she said. Read more about all the award recipients.

Crisis PR in the News

Crisis PR in the News
Why not take a cue from recent events - review your crisis communications plan.

Two major crises exploded into the news within the past two weeks: the oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico and the volcanic eruption in Iceland. Working in PR, we all know that a crisis or urgent situation, whether manmade or natural, can happen at any moment. That’s why we must be prepared.  While we often cannot escape the unexpected, we can be prepared to take action. If your organization has a crisis or  urgent response plan in place, it’s an opportune time to review its viability. If you don’t have one, now’s the time to develop one. Let’s take a cue from recent events to remain proactive.

The sugar industry, especially in Georgia, learned that crisis communications must be done quickly and effectively in order to avert further business damage. Here’s a case study you might find interesting about last year’s sugar plant explosion and how quick communications can be a standard of success.
