Landing The Perfect PR Job
Girl with Resume

Is there a perfect job out there for you? How do you really know which job is truly suitable for you, or which company would be compatible with your personality?

Many times people go almost their entire lives working at a job they do not like. Is it possible to find that perfect, fun, rewarding career? Yes it is, with determination, patience and research you will find it. Everyone deserves to find the job of their dreams. We often settle for less just to pay the mortgage. You can take a giant step of faith and apply for the job of your choice at the company of your choice.

First step, examine your likes and dislikes. What area of work do you truly enjoy? Evaluate your financial situation. What do you need and want to make in a compensation package? These are tough questions. Get out the scratch pad and make two columns and title them, "What I need in a job" and "What I would like in a job." See what you come up with. Do your research and focus on the "What I would like in a job" column. This may be the biggest favor you ever do for yourself.

Don't be afraid to apply for this dream position that you have researched. It is there waiting for you. Prepare your cover letter and resume and don't forget spell check. Have it proofed by another person. Research the company before you create your cover letter for maximum efficiency.

You are called for an interview, show up early and turn off your cell phone. Dress to impress. You will be judged immediately, and first impressions are lasting ones. Men wear slacks, shirts and ties and women wear suits. Your handshake will also make a lasting impression, so make it firm.

One of the most common questions that will be asked in an interview is, "What do you know about our company?" You are already prepared for that question, because you have completed your research before you wrote your cover letter. Now relax, and answer questions to the best of your ability with a positive attitude. Another tip, never make a negative statement about a previous employer in an interview. This is a surefire way to end the interview on a negative note. A tough question that is often asked, "How much do you need to make?" Don't be afraid to speak up, now is your chance to land the job of your dreams with the salary and benefits package to match. Chances are you will land the job because it is exactly what you have been looking for with that perfect company (well almost perfect). Your enthusiasm will make you a winner.

After your interview, send a thank you note or an email. Emails are acceptable but handwritten notes make a great impression. Relax, you will get that call. How soon did you say you can come to work?

Things to consider

  • Before you accept a PR position, make sure you believe in the company and its mission. It's hard to be an exceptional public relations professional for an organization that hasn't sold your heart.
  • "Job hopping" is not good PR for your personal branding. Do your homework before accepting a job opportunity to ensure that it's a good fit for you.
  • Networking with the right people can be your best bet for landing a great PR job. It's true that so many opportunities arise from who you know and who you're meeting.
  • Always be prepared to talk about your professional aspirations with your prospective boss. Clear expectations are important to present right from the beginning.
